Of the seven vocalists, there are six rappers: Ameer Vann, Dom McLennon, Merlyn Wood, Matt Champion, Joba, and Kevin Abstract, and while every rapper in the group brings a personalized, unique style, it is Abstract whose image and lyricism are most extraordinary.

The massively creative Abstract is back with his new album, Blanket, which arrives on November 3.
It’s the latest in a long line of projects from the rapper, and marks his first solo effort in several years.

He Left Home at a Young Age
Growing up in a very religious household was not easy for Abstract, who seemingly knew he was a member of the LGBTQ community from a young age.
Abstract is the independent, unapologetic group leader who combines amusing wordplay, epic storytelling, and social commentary to create his own original brand. The group has received praise and support from Kendrick Lamar, Tyler, the Creator, and more. Recording it was the first time I've ever felt that vulnerable in a studio, and I always get nervous every time I step up to the mic, so that was a brand new level of sharing,” he says.
But he knows the impact of that “Junky” verse has ballooned into something far bigger than himself. Kevin Abstract is something of an anomaly in the music industry: He’s an openly gay artist working primarily in hip-hop.
There aren’t many of those, and even fewer who have secured any real commercial success and critical acclaim.

Abstract has played a significant role in advocating for LGBTQ rights and representation in the music industry.
As an openly gay artist in a genre that has traditionally been less accepting of diversity — hip-hop — he has used his platform to challenge stereotypes and promote acceptance.
His authenticity in discussing his sexuality has made him a role model for many, and his music often explores themes of identity, love, and self-acceptance.

He Runs A Clothing Line
In addition to being creative when it comes to music, Abstract also launched a clothing brand called Video Store Apparel (or simply VSA) in 2021.
He started the business with his Brockhampton band member Romil Hemnani.
He knew that it wasn’t going to be easy, but he was willing to face the challenges head-on. On “Stupid” he raps “I miss my boyfriend’s fragrance / I’m a faggot, I say it, I scream that shit like I mean it.” He even acknowledges his effort to normalize queerness in hip-hop in “Junky” when he claims that he, “always [raps] about being gay” because there aren’t enough people who “rap and be gay.” He even invites the alleged homophobic killers from his hometown to “Come and cut my head off / And my legs off / And I’m a still be a boss till my head gone.” Kevin Abstract is a gay rapper, he wants everybody to know, and he couldn’t care less if that bothers anybody.
