In 2016, the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend trended on Twitter. They feel good about themselves when they do, and it’s something they can talk about at parties.

It’s the civil rights issue of our time!

Ethan Claide is the first protagonist in a Disney movie who is also gay. Aud Bool on the blog Prezi describes the term: "Coded gay is when a gay stereotype, 'gay behaviors' or 'camp' are used to imply that a character is homosexual while never explicitly stating that they are." This is often not seen as a positive practice.

If you’re making a family film and you aren’t doing something to undermine the heteronormative establishment, then by default you’re reinforcing it.

That’s why Oaken has the family he does, and makes a point of calling out to them.

And yet, in this case the filmmakers have walked that line really well: so well that the pro-gay themes have gone right over the heads of countless adult Christian viewers, many of whom have embraced Frozen as resonating powerfully with Christian themes.

However, a point I overlooked earlier has just been brought to my attention that I think does warrant mention.

First, let’s get the broad themes out on the table.

  • With her ice powers, Elsa is notably different from other people. A Cultural History of the Disney Fairy Tale: Once Upon an American Dream.

Sabrina Mittermeier is an assistant professor of American cultural history at the University of Kassel, Germany. Our icy queen hasn’t found her king, stirring up a blizzard of questions about who she could really love.

Elsa from Frozen has not been confirmed as gay by Disney, but her lack of a romantic relationship makes some fans believe she could be LGBTQ+.

2014. While Ethan rejects his father's farming career, the two manage to reach a negotiation. She then flees Arendelle – which unbeknownst to her has succumbed to a magical winter – and for the first time in her life, is free from the constraints of her family and society..

This moment is when Elsa verbalizes her feelings in the famous song, “Let It Go”, which has resonated with many queer people as a “queer anthem” (Fleeger 2014).

Elsa’s parents lock her away until she can control her powers, and so she remains secluded, even when they die in a shipwreck and the girls are left alone with the servants in their castle.

Elsa’s powers are triggered by strong emotion, including anxiety and anger, which makes them hard to conceal, something she shares with the similarly queer-coded X-Men (VanDerWerff 2019).

Over time, Elsa learns to embrace what makes her unique.

It’s like watching someone become who they’re meant to be, and it feels super powerful.

Queer themes pop up because there isn’t any talk of Elsa falling for a guy in Frozen. “So, Did Disney Give Elsa A Girlfriend in Frozen II?” The Mary Sue, November 24, 2019.

That’s what makes folks think she might be gay. Both academic analyses and media outlets, as well as a robust part of her fandom, have argued as much (see, for instance, Charania and Albertson 2018; Mason 2019; Rose 2020).
