I think Billy Eichner is brilliant and he brought so much of himself to that movie in such a fearless way. Yes, he could—and yes, they did.

His work proved that acting is about authenticity, not orientation. And naturally, there’s been a fair number of wood references that aren’t just referring to lumber.

While Macfarlane had not yet publicly come out, he was already portraying gay characters with sincerity and depth, which added to the speculation around his own identity. That includes the voice of Gay Man Working a Saw, a role he's not here to embody, but one rooted in his true family history and personal experience of carpentry. So it is comforting to know that this strong brand can still hold all these different voices.

It’s exciting for me to come to understand Hallmark in this way.

You don't come in with an idea about what's good and bad. So I'm incredibly proud of that. In Bros, he even drew from his own experience with guardedness and the tendency to downplay emotional needs—a performance that resonated with many viewers who saw themselves reflected in the character’s quiet armor.

By choosing what to reveal and what to hold close, Macfarlane has crafted a public presence that feels grounded.

And I would support it.”

You might’ve seen the question pop up across the internet: is Luke Macfarlane gay? This just boggles my mind, but specifically I wanted to talk about the comment that he had about the facade of the Kennedy Center.

‘The f***ing dude from Hallmark is gay? So I'm really proud of that movie.

And what about “Single All the Way”?

“Single All the Way” was fascinating. Growing up as a gay kid, it felt like it wasn’t a channel where I could find people who were like me.

Look, we all know that “Saturday Night Live” skit, and I could probably repeat the entire thing verbatim, so I know it very well, but I don't think it's actually accurate and bless 'em for continuing to grow with me.

Written by and starring Billy Eichner, Bros was one of the first major studio-backed LGBTQ+ rom-coms with an entirely queer principal cast. Macfarlane joked, “I don’t think they’ll ever have me back after today.”

However, he did tell Yahoo in 2019 that he would fully support Hallmark one day airing a movie where a gay romance was the central story.

He said: “…I have so much faith in the brand, if they feel like that’s something that’s on the horizon for them, sign me up.

Good design is about listening.

The architect was working in the international style at a time and out front you have slender columns. Scotty wasn’t just a side character—he was an openly gay man in a committed relationship with one of the main characters, and their romance became one of the show’s emotional backbones.

The role was groundbreaking at the time, especially on network television.

So I've been developing a script with a dear friend — actually, a dear friend that I met on my “Brothers & Sisters” days — to tell a Christmas LGBTQ+ story. Most of my woodworking friends would not squirm at "tongue and slot."

For you, what’s the significance of being an out gay person on Hallmark?

Well, it's really interesting because I think my first movie for Hallmark was over 10 years ago and it had this reputation that I never really totally agreed with.

“The fact is somebody said, ‘That guy who just did this movie “Bros,” where he gets into a lot of very gay stuff, can play a straight guy,’ and that’s truly because somebody said somebody in power said, ‘I’m going to give you a shot.’ I’m so grateful to Nick for that opportunity.”

Nick is Nicholas Stoller, the director of “Bros” and co-creator of “Platonic.” Currently in its second season, “Platonic” follows the lives — the ups, the downs, and the very hysterical — of best friends Will (Seth Rogen) and Sylvia (Byrne).

I joked with Macfarlane about the possibility of not playing gay again.

There was no double-reverse reveal.

On my mind right now is what’s happening in the U.S. politically and the importance of authentic representation. It was a role that drew directly from his own experiences as a gay man and allowed him to bring his full self to the screen in a new way.

When Did Luke Macfarlane Come Out as Gay?

Luke Macfarlane publicly came out in 2008 during an interview with The Globe and Mail, a major Canadian newspaper.

It was also a very different time in that I [was] less aware of the broader world.
